When you think back to the trip now, what is the first image that comes to mind?
When I think back to the trip, the first image that comes to mind is the image of the white cottage centered in the vast mountainous landscape of Rannoch Moor. The cottage acted as a marker for the beginning of a journey into the dramatic scenes of the Scottish Highlands.

Was there anything about Scotland that surprised you once you began looking at it through the camera?
Through the lens I was surprised by the sheer vastness of the regions we were exploring.

Scotland is a place with a lot of familiar imagery attached to it. How did you find your own way of looking at it?
A part of my practice has always been to purposely explore the obvious with the mindset of it being totally new. This way of seeing leads me to my own interpretations.

You photographed both expansive landscapes and very small details. How do those two ways of looking relate to one another?
When photographing expansive landscapes; I tend to minimize what I am looking at to lines, shapes, tones and colours. For smaller details I also strip an image back to these same fundamentals.

A red mug, a fence, a weathered boat sit alongside the bigger landscapes in the series. What is it about those quieter details that catches your eye?
I am very sensitive to certain tones and textures, sometimes you can’t put a finger on it, it’s an intuitive feeling.

As the journey went on, did what you found yourself photographing change?
No, not necessarily; but my ways of capturing what I was seeing changed as I began to experiment more.

How much does weather influence the way you see a place?
Of course, the weather / light is a huge influence on the way I see a place. The mood at any given time is weather dependent and what ultimately gives life to a scene.

What does shooting from a moving car allow that a carefully composed landscape does not?
There is more spontaneity / room for happy accidents; in a moving car you can’t always predict what may come into the frame.

Were there photographs you almost didn't take that became important afterwards?
Yes, the image of the red and white road markers almost passed me by. I love photographing repetition!

What makes an image feel like a memory rather than a record?
Certain light and tones feel particularly sentimental to me; it is often quite subtle but something that sticks with me. Usually these elements have nostalgic value also.

Was there anything Helena picked up on or brought forward in the collages that surprised you?
Yes, Helena’s view of the smaller details was brought more to the forefront with her ways of treating colours and cropping.

What would you want someone who has never been to Scotland to understand or feel from this series?
There is as much incredible beauty within the smaller moments and details as there is to the dramatic landscapes.
